Warning: Spoilers!
Marvel Studios was once on the brink of collapse, so they sold off the rights to popular characters Spider-Man to Sony and the X-Men and Fantastic Four to Fox.
Disney bought Marvel Studios and had to work with lesser known characters like Iron Man and Thor, but Disney still managed to make it the most bankable film franchise in the world.
They did this by creating a universe where the characters all interweaved, and each film used the opportunity to tease future movies in post-credit scenes, creating excitement for the next movie.
Disney was so successful that they bought back the popular Marvel characters from the studios that owned them. Negotiations for the rights to Spider-Man hit a snag, so Peter Parker will not appear in any Marvel Studios movies, but a merger with Fox means Fox’s X-Men and Fantastic Four characters can incorporate into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
